Grammy-winning lead singer of the popular band Hootie & the Blowfish, Darius Rucker was honored Monday with his very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The 57-year-old Rucker has been a permanent mainstay on Billboard Charts as a singer, songwriter, lead, and solo artist. With more than 20 million albums sold and four No. 1 albums, Darius Rucker is one of the bestselling artists of this generation.
What began in 1986 as a duo while a student at South Carolina University, Darius Rucker and Mark Bryan formed the band Hootie & the Blowfish adding Jim “Soni” Sonefeld and Dean Felber. In 2001, Darius Rucker would go solo, first releasing a R&B album, ‘Back to Then’ in 2002 and from there it was all country music for Rucker.
In 2008, Darius signed to Capitol Records Nashville and released his first country album ‘Learn to Live’. The album garnered Rucker the 2009 Country Music Association Awards – New Artist of the Year. Since then, Rucker has gone on to release six studio albums, including ‘Carolyn’s Boy’ earlier this year. To date, besides the four No. 1 albums on the Billboard Country charts, Mr. Rucker has 10 No. 1 singles on Country Radio.
Darius Rucker is also committed to his philanthropy work, volunteering and contributing to many charities that support the sick and underprivileged children. In addition, Rucker has donated nearly $2 million to the Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in addition to serving as a board member to MUSC Shawn Jenkins Children’s Hospital in his hometown of Charleston, South Carolina.
