The intersection of Ludlow and Rivington streets has been officially renamed as “Beastie Boys Square”, in honor of the groundbreaking pioneer rap group, the Beastie Boys. The New York City Council unanimously voted and approved the renaming of the intersection as an official landmark on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, known as a catalyst for the culture.
The move is a symbolic gesture that aligns with the many 50th anniversary celebrations giving honor to hip-hop and the legends who molded the art. True hip-hop heads vividly remember the corner of Ludlow and Rivington, as it was featured on the Beastie Boys iconic 1989 ‘Paul’s Boutique’ album.
The group’s surviving members, Michael “Mike D” Diamond and Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz, joined fans and city officials for a two-hour block party to commemorate the event. The celebration ended with a tribute to the late member of the Beastie Boys, Adam “MCA” Yauch, who passed away at the age of 47 in 2012 to cancer. The Beastie Boys are legendary, and it’s only fitting that the city awarded them with a street in their honor to celebrate their significance to the culture – Renzo
