As the world turns, so does the days of our lives! Try telling that to 19-year old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz. Before his 20th birthday, Carlos has won three Major American tournaments and goes down in the record books as the youngest to win a Masters 1000 event.
On Sunday, Alcaraz defeated Russian Daniil Medvedev to win the BNP Paribas Open title at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Ranked number 2. and regarded as the best tennis player in the world, Alcaraz will regain the No. 1 spot from Novak Djokovic Monday. In front of nearly 15,000 spectators, Alcaraz dazzled as he won in convincing fashion 6-3, and 6-2. Unfortunately, Djokovic did not participate at Indian Wells due to his unvaccinated status prohibiting him to travel to the United States.
Carlos Alcaraz turns 20 on May 5, replacing American Michael Chang as the youngest player to win Indian Wells men’s title since becoming a Masters 1000 tournament. The feat is no easy task, as Djokovic is a 22-time Grand Slam champion, and was considered the best opponent to defeat Alcaraz with 19 straight wins going into Sunday’s match. Alcaraz pockets also won, for grabbing the title, Carlos earned an astounding $1.2 million, while Medvedev received $662,360. Not bad for a great week of work.
