In 1956, Harry Belafonte released his breakthrough album “Calypso”, which went on to sell a million copies. Belafonte is well known for his hits ‘Jump in the Line’, ‘Mary’s Boy Child’, ’Jamaica Farewell’, and the ‘The Banana Boat Song’. Harry Belafonte style was considered unorthodox at the time, often blending blues, show tunes, and gospel. Nicknamed the “King of Calypso’, Mr. Belafonte would single handedly revolutionize Caribbean music in the 1950’s, defining the genre.
In addition to his great musical performances, Harry Belafonte starred in several films, which included Carmen Jones (1954), Island in the Sun (1957), and Odds Against Tomorrow (1959).
Harry Belafonte was a true statesman and supporter of the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950’s in its infancy. A close friend of the late Martin Luther King Jr., Harry Belafonte was an advocate for both political and humanitarian causes affecting African Americans. In 1087, Harry Belafonte became an UNICEF Goodwill, and American Civil Liberties Union ambassador. In 2021, Mr. Belafonte visited South Africa in support of the campaign against HIV/AIDS.
It is with great sympathy and compassion; Harry Belafonte passed away April 25th, 2023 at his home in Manhattan, New York from congestive heart failure. Harry Belafonte was 96 years old. Harry is survived by his wife Pamela Frank. Harry Belafonte had four children and five grandchildren from his previous two marriages.
