One man has emerged as a symbol of ambition, resilience, and community spirit in the heart of Harlem, where the echoes of history sound through its streets. Deyquan Nesbit, often known as Dey, has not only defied the odds. He has also become a driving force in defining the future of the area in which he grew up.

The driving force of Deyquan Nesbit

Dey’s story demonstrates the transformational power of education and determination. Dey grew up in the historic Polo Grounds Towers, a community known for its cultural diversity and historical legacy. His academic efforts indicate an early affinity for numbers, culminating in three notable degrees—a monument to his unwavering commitment to study.

“I am really a product of the environment, I am the embodiment of Harlem at its perfection…all of the connections I have made along the way, led me to where I am today.”

Dey’s academic curiosity took him deeper, despite having an associate degree in accounting and a bachelor’s degree in finance. He has an MBA in Economic Crime Investigation. In addition to a strong interest in deciphering the complexity of financial regulations and fraud prevention. In fact, Dey’s professional journey began in the fast-paced world of banking compliance, where he learned about transaction monitoring, anti-money laundering (AML) methods, and the complex terrain of financial crimes. As he rose through the ranks, he took on leadership roles. In doing so, he guided a team through problems such as federal consent orders with amazing tenacity, earning the organization a reputation for excellence.

Unleashing the UCC (Universal Currency Chamber)

Beyond the corporate world, Dey’s heart was still in Harlem. Recognizing the neighborhood’s potential for growth, he established an advising firm to help individuals and businesses handle financial complexities. In 2021, he launched the Universal Currency Chamber (UCC), a non-profit organization dedicated to financial literacy, education, and philanthropy.

Dey’s personal commitment to Harlem is reflected in the UCC. It is expected to open its storefront community center in December 2023. The group aspires to enhance the black community through programs such as Introduction to Trades, Financial Literacy Workshops, Path to Homeownership, Investment Strategies, and more. Inspired by the legacies of Malcolm X, Marcus Garvey, Noble Drew Ali, and Elijah Muhammad – the primary emphasis on STEAM for younger participants ensures a comprehensive approach to education.

Nonetheless, Harlem now has a determined advocate for its blooming future in Deyquan Nesbit. His journey, defined by a tenacious pursuit of education, leadership, and a deep dedication to community, serves as a source of inspiration for future generations. Furthermore, Dey continues to bridge the gap between his past and the future he dreams for Harlem. One of empowerment, education, and long-term success—as the UCC opens its doors.
