George Lopez NBC Comedy ‘Lopez vs. Lopez’ Tantalizes Funny Bone with Relationship – Comedy of Latino Working Class Family

George Lopez has been making millions laugh with his comedy and situational acting for years. Regarded as one of the funniest comedians, George Lopez dial viewers in with his unique way of bringing everyday issues into full focus.  This time around, he is joined by his daughter, Mayan as the co-star in Lopez vs. Lopez. The sitcom premiered November 4, 2022 on NBC’s primetime slot of 8/7c on Friday’s. The premiere show drew nearly 3 million viewers with favorable reviews from some of the biggest critics. The comedy is an open view of a working class old-school father whom encounters conflict as he attempts to understand and co-exist with his Gen Z daughter. Although dysfunctional at times, the relationship between the two makes for great dialogue that touches on subject matter that plague’s families in real-time, today. 

Lopez vs. Lopez was created by Debby Wolfe (‘One Day at a Time’ creator), George Lopez and his daughter Mayan Lopez. Produced by Universal Television in association with Mi Vida Loba, 3 Arts, Travieso Productions and Mohawk Productions, the comedy.  Executive produced by George Lopez, Katie Newman, Bruce Helford, Michael Rotenberg and Debby Wolfe, Lopez vs. Lopez is the perfect Sitcom television show to help spotlight the generational gaps that exist in the household. 

The cast includes Selenis Leyva, Brice Gonzalez, Matt Shively, Al Madrigal, George Lopez, and daughter Mayan Lopez. Mayan, the 26-year old actress has made several appearances; George Lopez Show, Mr. Troop Mom, and more recently, the 2017 Netflix film Handsome. In Lopez vs. Lopez, Mayan’s mother, is played by Selenis Leyva. Mayan, like many children who live through the dramatic experience of parents separating or divorce, build resentment towards one side. George Lopez is the culprit, as the divorce resulted from his infidelity in the marriage. Mayan’s husband Quinten, played by Matt Shively is the typical good guy trying to cope with an overbearing father-in-law and his friend Oscar, played by Al Madrigal.  George Lopez in character uses the social interaction with his grandson Chance (Brice Gonzalez), as a mediator of reason when his point of view seems unsettling. 

The overall theme of Lopez vs. Lopez touches on an array of topics which dives into the realms of mental health, family stability and social media’s effect on everyday life. As with many working class families, the Latino community faces the issues of dysfunction, separation and generational differences that create gaps within the family. Lopez vs. Lopez is a real-time look into the living room of life not so perfect, but in humor and compassion that brings both sadness and joy. 

The show uses humor to deal with adversity and challenges of the Latino family, and will hopefully prove fruitful and inspire others. George Lopez is a groundbreaking actor who has fought through racism and stigmatism to propel as one of Hollywood’s elite actors. His contributions to the Latino community in philanthropy and film, has bridged a way for many in the Latino community and Lopez vs. Lopez will open up the doors of communication that may be missing in the home.
