Kevin Porter Jr Agrees to Four-Deal With The Rockets & First Year Is Only Guaranteed $15 Million

Kevin Porter Jr made headlines “The Rockets and Porter Jr. reached an agreement on the terms of a four-year contract extension of $82.5 million.

However, the Rockets won the negotiation with a contract that gave them substantial protections with a player who, at times, was distracted and a distraction. Adrian Wojnarowski from ESPN was the first to announce the news, but the following details were agreed upon.

Woj also reported that, “Extension has a unique structure that allows for significant upside for Porter Jr. and protections for the Rockets. The Rockets have invested tremendous time and energy into Porter Jr., on and off court and they’re showing a commitment to keep developing him as a cornerstone.”

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, “Kevin Porter Jr.’s four-year extension is only guaranteed for $15.86 million, all in Year 1, sources said. The contract includes June trigger dates after the first season, but the Rockets can essentially release Porter at any point without further pay up to the $82.5M.”

In a recent interview Porter Jr interview, praised the Houston Rockets for saving his life.

“This organization saved my life,” Porter said.

When his coach heard what Porter said, Stephen Silas shared “It means a lot.” as he fought hard to fight back tears.

There are protections in the first year of the extension that, if the guidelines are respected, can lead to partial safeguards in the future. This can be seen as a win for both parties, and a contract like this could induce Porter to keep its focus on the court and out.

Porter averaged 16.5 points and 6.2 assists a game last season for the Rockets, an athletic secondary shooter designer in the backcourt alongside Jalen Green.

Porter is a quality shooter, especially on the pull-ups, and took more than half of his shots past the arc last season,
hitting 37.5%, but he can also bring the ball to the floor and create opportunities for others. He is also a good defender.
