American Mikaela Shiffrin is now the record holder as the winningest skier of all time with her 87th World Cup win. In a storied career that only spans the past 12-years, Mikaela has been able to accomplish the impossible. With 245 races to her resume, Mikaela Shiffrin will stand alone in the record books until some brave soul dares to erase it.
Since New Years, Shiffrin has one slalom match, including 5 of the six which qualifies as World Cup events. Friday’s victory for the record in Are, Sweden marks the same location as her very first World Cup event. Talking about irony! Shiffrin now holds the record with the most wins by either a male or female skier in history.
However, it was no cakewalk. Shiffrin won by just 92 hundredths of a second as she barely edged out Wendy Heldener of Switzerland. The win signifies 13 World Cups this season by Shiffrin, and the fourth that went down to the wire. Just the day before on Saturday, Shiffrin won her 86th World Cup trophy over Federica Brigone of Italy in slalom.
The previous record holder, Swedish Alpine skater Ingemar Stenmark broke the record in 1989 the games in Aspen, Co. Ingemar stated via The Associated Press “She’s much better than I was. You cannot compare”, “She has everything.” Now age 66, Stenmark is a true advocate of the sport and cherished that he was able to sit back and reflect. After the match, Sweden’s third-place skier Anna Swenn Larsson chimed in and offered her congratulations to Shiffrin.
