With September 22nd marking the last day of summer, and the beginning of fall in the United States, the change in seasons also signifies the official start of flu season.  The flu season typically starts at the beginning of fall and carries through year-round, with the most severe cases during the winter months.  In the past few years, cases of influenza have been down significantly due to the rise of the Covid-19 virus. However, experts show concern that a resurgence of the flu virus is inevitable.

The low report of Influenza cases over the past few years can be attributed to the Covid-19 restrictions, which aided in suppressing respiratory born viruses. Social distancing restricted the flu virus by eliminating transmission due to a lack of a host.

How can we protect ourselves for the upcoming season?

The answer is simple and complicated at the same time. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that individuals receive their annual influenza vaccine.  For those aged six months or older, the vaccination is the best way to build up immunity to the flu virus. Receiving a yearly flu shot is the “first and most important step in protecting one self., ” reducing hospitalizations, illness and deaths, according to the CDC. Every year prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, influenza was responsible for over millions of cases and nearly 55,000 deaths every year in the U.S. alone.

Influenza is highly contagious and can last from one to two weeks, leaving you drained. Factors such as age, the state of your immune system, and general health may determine the severity of one’s symptoms.

Both the Flu and Covid-19 are highly contagious. If you are experiencing any of the below symptoms, contact your medical provider for guidance and treatment

  • Fever
  • Aches
  • Chills
  • Diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Vomiting
  • Shortness of breath
  • Sore Throat
  • Fatigue
  • Runny nose
5 Ways to Fight the Flu
  1. Get the flu vaccine. It’s the best way to protect yourself against the flu.
  2. Wash your hands well and often.
  3. Steer clear of someone who is sick (coughing, sneezing, etc.)
  4. Cough or sneeze into a tissue or your elbow — not into your hands.
  5. Avoid touching your eyes, mouth or nose
  6. Proper well balanced diet
  7. Stay home if you have the flu.
