Wow! Thirty-Nine years ago, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar accomplished a feat we thought would never be duplicated; a player in the modern age, eclipsing the Hall of Fame Lakers record of 38,387 career points. Well ladies in gentlemen, records are to be broken, and on February 7, 2023, Los Angles Lakers guard LeBron James has just done the impossible! Not only breaking the record, but will continue to add to the total and set the standard that shall stand for ……. ummmm perhaps, infinity!
On Tuesday night in a sold out Crypto.com Arena, the crowd, packed with sports enthusiast, stars and the commissioner himself were in attendance to see the record be broken. At half-time, it was apparent that this was definitely the night with LeBron less than 16 points away from the epic milestone. The opponent, the Oklahoma City Thunder played amazing defense, but you could feel that this was one night the King wouldn’t be denied.
From opening tip, LeBron was locked in and focused. His first couple of possessions were full speed ahead drives to the basket, either he was going to score, or draw a foul. From the line, he was 6 for 8, and 6 for 10 from the field. As Lebron drew closer, you could feel the crowd’s roaring chant….. all hail the King!
Talking about Showtime, the Laker faithful was front row and center with Magic Johnson, James Worthy, Jay-Z, Denzel Washington, Bob McAdoo and Dwayne Wade were all in attendance. But, all eyes were on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as LeBron drew closer.
With only 11 seconds left in the third quarter, LeBron hit his 35th and 36th point on a fadeaway jumper giving him the record. The game came to an immediate stop as LeBron gave a look of relief and excitement. Commissioner Adam Silver, accompanied by Bronny, Bryce , his mother Gloria, wife Savannah and daughter Zhuri all joined him as the Lakers played a tribute video. Lakers legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar presented LeBron with the gameball as the two embraced. Officially, there has been a changing of the guard! King James
