Streaming network giant Netflix, announced last week that Chris Rock will be the first to test the new live streaming technology with his very own special in 2023. The move by Netflix Is well welcomed after the network has had amazing success with specials. Since January 2022, Netflix has hosted over 50+ comedy specials from just about every big name from; Gabriel Iglesias to Pete Davidson.
The announcement of Netflix’s first-ever live global streaming event will be epic, opening the gateway for future comedy and entertainment extravaganzas. Netflix last produced Chris Rock’s 2018 comedy special, Tambourine, which set records for a comedy special. Earlier this year, Rock appeared alongside comedian genius Dave Chapelle for the Netflix is a Joke Festival. The distinction of Chris Rock to host his brand of comedy in a live streaming manner will establish Netflix’s position in the market. The move comes as a strategy to focus on unscripted material such as stand-up specials and competition shows.
With streaming services going through a transitional period, diversifying content will give subscribers more reason to stay, and new opportunities for new subscribers. It is predicted that streaming services will possess 60% ownership of pay-per view live sporting events in the next five years. This is just the beginning, and there couldn’t have been a bigger name in the comedy industry to start it off, but Chris Rock. Rock has been on his Ego Death tour produced by Live Nation which began on April 2nd in Atlantic City, New Jersey and is set to end in Los Angeles on the 17th of November.
