If you’re a lover of true r&b, You know; that classic sound that’s embedded into the soundtrack of everyday life currently, you are gonna love yourself some Janine. The New Zealand born singer/songwriter has just released her new single ‘If I Call’, and by all indications, it’s a certified hit!
‘If I Call’, comes as Janine’s first single in almost two years, leaving a void from where she left off in 2021 with the affectionate singles, ‘Losing Me’, and ‘Crying in the Club’. Janine is quite the entrepreneur, she is signed to her own label imprint, Little Mixtape Records, which has been the home to her recent recordings, including her new single ‘If I Call’.
‘If I Call’, is a tale of love lost, with no hope of recovery. The emotional baggage that lingers with a break-up can be more devastating than the break-up itself. ‘If I Call’, is a call-to-action that never materializes, due to the realization of rejection. Not so much rejection, but knowing things would never be the same. The pain of yearning and belonging is often a space of tapping one’s self worth. However, in the end, you realize that separation just might be the remedy.
The production on ‘If I Call’, fits the tone of the record. The new wave production is handled by Janine and Will Henderson who was a band member of the Janine and the Mixtape record in 2013. Janine’s voice is airy, boastful and full on the record. The small space from touching the perfect octaves’, along with pitch and tone are on point. ‘If I Call’ is a display of Janine’s vocal greatness.
Nearly five years to the date of her debut album, “99” via Atlantic Records, Janine has fans in anticipation of a sophomore release. For the time being, we must wait patiently. ‘If I Call’, is a sure fire single that will quench the thirst of real r&b, that is, until we can receive another classic album.
