With the injection of AI-generated music being filtered into mainstream, it was only a matter of time before the genre gained acceptance. In recent months, many artists and executives across the industry expressed concerns on how the technology might affect the overall integrity of music. I think the answer is clear; It won’t, unless AI-generated music is properly tagged and categorized as such. Now for the topic of copyright, that’s a totally different ball of wax.
Grammys CEO, Harvey Mason Jr. made an announcement earlier this week that the Recording Academy would recognize music incorporating AI-generated elements at the Grammy Awards. The inclusion of AI-generated music opens up resources and options to millions of creators who before, were not eligible for the Grammys.
So how would a composition be judged, or honored? A great question! As for the individual piece of AI-generated content, the authorship would belong to the human creator. While opposition has arised, the societal changes in technology and the means of receiving such has pushed the norm to heights unimaginable just a few years ago.
We spoke to one of the newest members of the 2023 Class of Professional members to the Recording Academy, Keith “Youngin” George II who is not only an executive, but manages and consults Grammy nominated producers in the industry. Youngin states, “It was only a matter of time before AI-generated music became recognized as an artform that is conceived from a human element, although artificially engineered. I think it’s a good idea to recognize the author in the space of originality.”
The 2024 Grammy Awards will be interesting, to say the least. The Grammys will introduce three new categories: Best African Music Performance, Best Alternative Jazz Album and Best Pop Dance Recording. In addition, there will be a celebration and acknowledgement for AI-generated music creators. The Grammys are committed to their pledge to make the awards fair, transparent and accurate in 2024.
