What if I told you there was an early recording of music by the Jackson 5 that dates back to 1967. You would probably say thats insane! My thoughts exactly; however, truth is, there is a unreleased song and the entire recording of the Jackson 5 first ever studio session that produced the single “BIG BOY”.
The recording of the song “Big Boy” has been kept under wraps for nearly 55-years without leaks, pre-released samples, or online streams. Reasons why? The song and the recording of the session were simply lost in the shuffle of life. In 1968, a Steeltown version of “BIG BOY” was released; however, the 1967 version marks the first-ever recording session (ONE-DERFUL) of 8-year-old Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5. The backstory is quite fascinating. It’s a little-known fact that The Jackson 5, which would later adapt the name The Jackson 5 recorded “I’m a BIG BOY now” at a studio session under ONE-DERFUL records. Soon after the recording, the Jackson 5 and ONE-DERFUL went their separate ways. A year later, The Jackson 5 would sign to Steeltown Records and recorded “BIG BOY” which was released in 1968 as their first single under the imprint.
Subsequently, The Jacksons would eventually meet and sign with Motown Records under legendary pioneer Barry Gordy. From chart topping releases to the explosion of Michael Jackson solo career, we thought we had discovered every inch and cranny of the massive catalog. It was writer Jake Austen who recieved an anonymous tip in 2009; “there might be a hidden gem, a first time studio session of the Jackson 5’s.” From the tip, the search officially begun, Just a few years later; The original first-time recording session which produced the original ONE-DERFUL version of “BIG BOY” is available to the general public in a collectors edition.
The Jackson 5 (The Jacksons) have sold more than $100 million records worldwide in addition to being honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
