Things You Should Know About Google News 20th Birthday; Major Upgrades to Desktop Interface

It’s almost inconceivable to think that the search engine giant, Google, has only been in existence 24 years, with Google News turning 20 today.  As the youngsters would say, “how did ya’ll survive without google”? Oddly put; but definitely a valid point!

With about an estimated 91% of the market share, Google holds its weight as the most recognized search and optimization engine in the world.  Google News, the aggregate muscle behind the search engine pumps out massive articles organized from verified publishers, magazines and content creators. The announcement of Google News 20th anniversary was met with anticipation as millions of outlets utilize the service to make decisions, and shape the World. For many in journalism and mass media, google news serves as the lifeline of reputable information, which is deciphered and passed along to the masses.

In addition to its anniversary, Google rolled out an updated desktop interface which will give users the option to customize their feeds, enabling the ability to prioritize the topics relevant.  Users will have the ability to add multiple locations to their custom feeds to reach the information prevalent to the particular region, state, or even country. Google News was created by Krishna Bharat after September 11, 2001 as a distribution of developments among journalists and contributors.

From a redesigned UI, Google News now has options that will allow users to focus on local news, in addition to global news.  The fact-checking section shows an original claim next to the headlines, which makes verification from independent sources more comprehensive.  In the main section of the custom interface, located in the top right corner gives users the ability to filter directly to the topics needed, while eliminating distracting stories.

In addition, Google News will return to Spain after nearly a decade. In 2014, Google News was dropped from Spain due to laws requiring users to pay to utilize content and headlines.  The news of Google News updates also came with the support of the Google News Initiative in support of newsrooms for a diverse innovative news industry. For news platforms such as ProMediaBank, the updates are essential to their ability to broadcast news on a global scale.  “The future of news aggregation is now, I applaud Google and the Google News platform for the upgrades and innitiatives to advance news distribution,” states founder and co-owner of ProMediaBank and Aux Punch Mag.
