Who said black girls can’t rock? Willow Smith shuts down that narrative with her new Album entitled, <Copingmechanism>. The new album from the star who blew us away with her pop/r&b anthem, “Whip My Hair”, has transformed into an incredible woman. The evidence is clear, <Copingmechanism> is a true rock masterpiece of expression and maturity.
Willow first experimented with rock on her 2015 album Ardipithecus, and by her 2017 project The 1st, the transformation was evident. <Copingmechanism> is a pure rock album which speaks to the soul with high energy and substance that tackles an array of subjects. Willow is no stranger to expression and advocating for what she believes in as she does as a co-host on Red Table Talk with her mother Jada Pinkett Smith and grandmother Adrienne Banfield-Norris.
In recent years, Willow has drawn inspiration from musical influences such as Lamb Of God, Deftones, Crowbar, Radiohead and of course her mother. <CopingMechanism> offers classic guitar riffs in which Willow cleverly expresses stories of redemption, sadness, and rejection. Willow’s songwriting has progressed by leaps and bounds and will keep listeners at the edge of their seats. With songs like Maybe It’s My Fault, No Control, Split, and Curious/Furious, you would think <Copingmechanism> was a depressed filled album. To the contrary, <Copingmechanism> is actually the opposite. The album stares the taboo of sadness, depression and isolation head on and I do believe this just may be Willow’s most confessional record, yet.
Willow Smith is hopeful that <Copingmechanism> will help diversify rock and metal by demonstrating that black women can rock. Black women and disenfranchised people have a front row view of topics that have aggravated the core of our country. The key element of a rock song is the cause, which Willow feels could make for classic rock songs.
